Based on your understanding of UDL, explain, describe, and/or demonstrate how digital technologies can be used to provide learners with a range of effective options for:
- Engaging with learning goals, learning tasks and learning materials
- Representing learning materials and information to learners
- Showing and demonstrating what has been learned
Based
on my own understanding of UDL, I believe digital technology can help enhance
and promote independence in students with learning disabilities by creating accessibility. Technology has
come so far and learning tools now are able to provide instant feedback,
interactive representations, and a
plethora of options/different devices for representing the learning and
fulfilling gratification in students.
Classrooms accessible to everyone, with and without disabilities, will reduce the need to make as many accommodations. For example, an elevator leading to a classroom is not only wheelchair accessible, it is provided to benefit everyone. Examples of technology provided to students with learning disabilities, but still benefits all include accessible web pages, applications and extensions allowing students with lower reading levels and language skills to access information and communicate with others, calculators with larger numbers and symbols for students with vision difficulties, instructional software, that allow students to collaborate with peers to complete assignments in the classroom, writing tools and software programs on Ipads or other devices.
The wonderful reason for incorporating digital technology into educational settings is to create opportunities for students with learning disabilities to be an integral part of the class, and take part in activities where he or she otherwise could not, depending on the severity of the disability. Below I have attached a short video that helps me understand UDL better, as well as a good understanding of the importance of helping meet the needs of our students, regardless of ability.
